Introducing a Column by Amanda Finn

Amanda Finn in Punta Mita, Mexico

When I started traveling, I started seeing the world differently. Even once I was home, my everyday experiences were forever changed. One of my favorite quotes from Anthony Bourdain comes to mind:

Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you.

Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach

That sentiment is what you can expect from Travel at Now Frolic. A snapshot, work put to things gleaned from the world around us. One month I might be exploring the joys of heritage travel while another introducing you to artisans in Central America.

This will not be run-of-the-mill travel content — itinerary building and must-have gadgets or gizmos. Instead, it will be an authentic adventure, with all the nitty gritty details of travel. I want readers to truly get a sense of why a certain place inspired me to write, and learn about how my tattoos make my travel life interesting. In the same way that Bourdain captured his experiences with wit, I hope to imbue that same spirit here.

In January, my first column will be about visiting one of my familial homelands in the Czech Republic with my mom. The country speaks to me as a traveler in ways no other place on Earth ever has, and exhibits how engaging in heritage travel allows us to feel a new level of inspiration.

Each month, we’ll explore new cultures and traditions together. We’ll find new ways to experience life, whether we’re in the bitter cold of a Midwest winter or sunning ourselves on the beaches of Bali. I do all of this in the hopes that you will be inspired, just as travel writers have inspired me, to do more, see more, and be more.

Welcome to Now Frolic. You’re reading a pre-release introduction to a publication covering a life of adventure and meaningful community. Every week, we tell human-centered stories about travel, the outdoors, nightlife, and civic life. Life should be fun, and we want you to be a part of this journey with us.
