Introducing a Column by Katelynn Humbles
Katelynn Humbles
Let’s be honest—it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by our world’s constant stream of bad news. But what about the neighbor who started a food drive that grew into a movement? Or the local artist whose mural brought new life to a forgotten corner of town? Or the small nonprofit tackling big challenges with nothing but heart and determination? Those bright moments are what I want to focus on.
I’m Katelynn Humbles, a writer and a passionate disability rights activist with a deep commitment to creating more inclusive, equitable communities — work that has taken me from local town halls to nationwide legislative efforts.
That experience and that fire fuel everything I do, including this column. When we uplift people’s stories, we don’t just share their experiences—we ignite real, meaningful change.
I will be your guide as we uncover the bright, beautiful moments that make our communities shine. From my home in Reading, Pennsylvania, to the buzzing streets of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., the Now Frolic Civic Life column is about celebrating the good that’s often right under our noses.
Often, the most impactful stories are right in front of us. They are hidden in plain sight, waiting for someone to notice. Each month, I will bring you stories of resilience, creativity, and connection — the kind that transforms our neighborhoods and communities in the most surprising ways. Together, we’ll meet the people who refuse to sit on the sidelines, explore projects that bring communities together, and shine a light on the quiet acts of kindness happening all around us.
My hope is that these stories inspire you to look around and see the beauty in your own community, and carry that inspiration into your daily life. The good is out there, and I can’t wait to start this journey with you. Life should be fun!
