How can you make the New York City Marathon look like a joke? By running 123 miles around Central Park.
At 6:05 AM this morning, March 8th, 2025, Hamish Magoffin began his attempt to break the record for the Central Park Loop Challenge. He will end his run at 12:55 AM on Sunday, March 9th, when the Park closes for the evening.
The current record is 19 loops around the park set by Oz Pearlman who ran 19 loops to raise money for the Save the Children Ukraine Relief Fund. Magoffin will be pushing for 20 loops, covering approximately 123 miles. The rules of the challenge are simple: run as many miles as you can within the official opening and closing times of Central Park.
Magoffin isn’t participating in this challenge for the thrill of it, he’s doing it to raise awareness for his foundation: The Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation (PAM). Magoffin created PAM to honor his late wife and six-month-old son who he lost to perinatal depression in 2021. Magoffin is a recent NYC transplant, and this challenge will kick off PAM’s operation in the United States. Money raised will support further research and education, including a documentary about his late wife, Pranaiya Oulapathorn.
“Running has been my main way to raise awareness for PAM…When I moved to New York, I was looking for some type of running challenge to do [for PAM]. I [did some research] and this came up…the first 30 or so miles are fine. It’s towards the end where it all starts to set in,” Hamish told Now Frolic.
If you’re reading this teaser on Saturday, March 8th, Magoffin is right now running an ultramarathon around Central Park. We do not yet know the outcome of the run, or whether Magoffin has succeeded in setting a new record for one of the most unique distance-running challenges in the world.
